Since
the dawn of man we have struggled with our mighty
beards, alone and in caves.
Later, for many centuries barbers would skillfully wield their blades,
giving men a great
shave, but this has become a lost profession. Now, most men shave daily
at home.
Preparing
for a shave with a traditional brush,
soap, and shaving mug
has been recently gaining
popularity. Shaving mugs
should have style, function, and personal taste. Embrace the
time-honored tradition and improve your shaving experience!
How
to use a
shaving
mug:
Step
1: Most standard shaving soaps and mugs are
interchangable;
place your favorite soap into the bottom of the
shaving mug.
Step 2: Fill your badger hair brush with warm water,
letting any excess drip out and giving it a single light tap.
Step 3: Lightly swirl the tips of the brush hairs around the top of the
soap, getting the soap wet, beginning to build the lather, and loading
the brush with soap.
* There are also moisturizing oils you
can apply
before the lather for extremely tough beards.
Step 4: After filling the brush with lather, first use a swirling
motion to
apply to your pre-moistened beard. Once mostly covered, next use a
painting stroke up and down to make a thick lather covering your entire
beard.
Step 5: Rinse your brush with warm water until the soap is completely
gone and hang your brush in the holder.
This
routine prepares your whiskers for a closer shave. Once the
first
shave is complete you can re-lather your face and shave against the
grain of your beard for an extra close shave. At first only shave one
time per day until your skin becomes used to the irritation. Moisturize
with aftershave to let your skin heal between shaves.

Porter's
Shaving Mug
By Irene (Idaho) - My husband uses this mug everyday and it is
a very sturdy and attractive mug. Works well for its purpose.
By Francois "CCB" (USA) - A nice, well-designed mug. It has an
"old-fashioned" look, and the curved lip helps you avoid knocking the
brush against the mug when lathering. Unfortunately, the mug so narrow
it only fits Porter's brand soap, which is the worst shaving soap I
have used. This makes the mug useless with any decent soap, and my mug
now sits alone in the cupboard.
By Alfred L. Moore - This is a great shaving mug.I looked at
hundreds of them before I picked this one.Great style. It looks like a
shaving mug and not a coffee mug.
By Country Boy (United States) - The first time I seen this; the looks
of it caught my eye just as if it were an antigue shave mug. The best
thing I like about it is the old style looks & the flared top
that helps to eliminate the banging of the shave brush on the sides as
with a regular style shaving mug. The handle is full sized and seems it
is very well made to last but never cost alot like some other shaving
mugs!
By Timothy Bergman (Lakewood, CA United States) - Mug is very
attractive. Feels solid in your hand. Resisted chipping (and I dropped
it more than once). The design and logo look super classy. Cheapest mug
I could find and I was surprised at the quality.
Colonel
Conk Model 111 Santa Fe Shave Cup
By Paul D. "PicturHolic" (Albuquerque, NM) - The cup is a classic New
Mexico hand-thrown ceramic cup. Quite handsome! The soap I received was
Colonel Conk's almond with avocado oil. It might take a shave or two
for you figure out the consistence of lather that best fits your
shaving apparatus and style. When accomplished, however, this soap
affords a closer, more comfortable shave than anything in a can, jar,
or tube. Period!

* Shaving Mug Rubber Green
By G. Newman "My Two Cents"
(Nooksack, WA USA) - When I first opened the package for this
mug, I was shocked by the size of it. It's larger than a coffee mug.
BUT, upon using it, I now love it. I say it's sturdy because it feels
solid in the hand and does what it's supposed to do very effectively,
holding the soap and having plenty of room to rotate your shaving
brush. It's safe because nothing can break it. It's made from a good,
hard rubber. I also like the green color. I recommend it to you fellow
shaving mug and soap guys. By the way, are you also using a
double-edged or straight razor?
By D. Cooper (Indianapolis, In USA) - I really like this shaving mug,
it is made of smooth rubber and easy to clean. The top opening is big
enough for any size soap you wish to use.
And if you drop the mug it will not break. A great shaving mug.
Kingsley
For Men Wood Shave Soap Bowl with Lid
By
S. Smith - I followed Jason Bradshaw's method, which I applaud;
sometimes it is surprisingly difficult to think outside of the box!
Here is what I did, which is a slight modification:
I chopped mine up and used a "double boiler" method on the stove top.
Like melting chocolate for baking, you want the temperature to be just
hot enough for it to melt. The less heat you use, the lower the risk of
"cooking" the soap and changing the soap's chemical structure and
damaging it. It also makes it easier to pour into the bowl because you
haven't cooked off any of the moisture.
The finish on the lip of my bowl is starting to chip because it's not a
real wood stain. I probably wouldn't buy this product again. I would
look for something that was the right shape, first of all. It is also
lousy for traveling because it is bulky and there is no way to secure
the lid to the bowl. Looks classy on the bathroom sink, though.
By Nelson Abreu "Living Lush" (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - I purchased this
item especially for use with Colonel Conks shaving soap, as it was
rated highly and matched by Amazon. When I recieved the bowl, the
packaging wasn't spectacular looking, so if this is a gift to someone,
do not send it directly to them.
This bowl is very finely crafted and wonderfully polished. It's made
from solid wood and is very smooth and well made. It did smell strongly
of varnish when I first opened the packaging, but that went away in a
couple of days.
My two complaints are: It's not deep enough for a new bar of Conk's
soap. It's about 1/4" shy of being deep enough. Second, the lid, while
I wouldn't say it's improperly made by any means, is looser than I
would prefer. A snug lid would make this perfect for traveling.
Overall, an extraordinary value, and I would buy it again.
By Kenneth Pilcher "seeker" - This is a wood bowl just large
enough to hold a cake of shaving soap. I was charged about $15 and more
than $5 for shipping. I would have been better off with a cereal bowl
from the kitchen. It doesn't warm with hot water, because wood is an
insulating material that doesn't transfer heat. Wouldn't buy it again.
By Jason Bradshaw "iraq sucks" (iraq) - This is a very nice
bowl. Thats really all this is. A wooden bowl! So if you looking for a
wooden bowl this is the one for you! As far as the soap pucks not
fitting. Take a soap puck chop it up into little pieces put it into a
container that you dont mind being soapy. Microwave it for about a
minute or until its melted. Pour it in your nice new wooden bowl and
you are now rocking out a bowl with soap in it that also closes. It
looks and works great. You also dont feel like a monkey training for
NASA trying to figure out a the square peg round hole puzzle.
By J. Graml (Exciting Newport News!) - I just needed a cheap
and easy way to store my shaving soap, without the purchase of a
shaving mug. This bowl looks nice on the counter, and keeps the suds
nice and dry. If you purchase the Colonel Conk shaving soap (I
recommend it!), the soap cake doesn't quite fit this bowl. You need to
use it a few times and let the soap wear down a bit.
By Benjamin J. Saffer "jones" (Springfield, OH, USA) - This is
a VERY attractive piece to add to your wet-shaving kit, albeit
impractical for the tall cylindrical col. conk soaps Ive grown to love,
at first. If you can tolerate waiting until your soap cylinders
decrease in volume, or manually cut down your soaps, this dish is A-OK.
Otherwise, spend a little more money on something else that simplifies
the process.
By Bradley Maggard (Adrian, MI) - My wife got me this for
christmas.
This is a very attractive bowl that does exactly what its supposed to,
and looks great. Unfortunately, for a new shave soap puck, it needs to
be about 1/4" deeper for the lid to properly close.
About 2 weeks into the shave soap puck, it closes as it should now and
I'm very happy with it!
By Chris R. - I had to cut the Kingsley soap in order to ge
the lid to close. I would assume the Kingsley soap would be a perfect
fit in the Kingsley Wood Shave bowl. I assumed wrong. But whatever,
it's a nice wood bowl & I feel good holding it. It's not a
tacky aerosol can.

Conk white Apothecary Shave Mug with Shave Soap
By Gregory - The Col. Conk
shaving mug arrived in a timely
fashion (in
time to make an appearance onstage in a production of "Woyzeck") and as
described. I'm very pleased with it and would do business with this
seller again.
By D. Oldfield "Ninja guy" (Ahwahnee, CA USA) - It works
wonderfully as a shaving mug. It has a nice little handle and enough
room for the soap. I could do without the 'Col. Conk' nonesense, though.
Edwin
Jagger Ivory Porcelain Shaving Bowl With Handle
By A. Rudolph (Foster City,
CA United States) - I have tried many different shaving bowls
and mugs and for me this one is the easiest to hold onto and not to
deep or to shallow. I wrap my hand around the mug with the stub handle
sticking out between my two fingers...real easy to use
